10 December 2020: Creators & Communities March for Fair Copyright
On the 10th December, Recreate, BlindSA and other organisations marched demanding that Parliament passes and returns the Copyright Amendment, and the Performer Protection Amendment Bills back to parliament, and that the President signed them.
Dozens of performers including Nambitha Mpumlwana, Marah Louw, Soulful G, Kenny Mabela, Nkosazana, Da Coo, KgoSHEgadi, Black, Viwe, Blaq Cherry, Prosperity Dancers and others performed and spoke in support of the Bills.
The ongoing delays in the bills are continuing to deny dignity to millions of South Africans that are lacking in access to knowledge, as well as preventing local creatives and developers from earning fair royalties in line with their international counterparts.
At the conclusion of the event, President of BlindSA Ntshavheni Netshituni handed over a Braille copy memorandum of demands to a representative of Government. The copy handed over was in Braille to show symbolically how millions of South Africans are denied content in accessible formats.
Access to information activists took to the streets on Thursday, 10 December to demand that the long-awaited for Copyright Amendment Bill be signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
